Senior pets often need grooming more, not less. They may struggle to clean themselves, wear nails unevenly, develop thinner skin, or spend more time resting in one position. At the same time, long standing sessions and unfamiliar handling can become tiring. The answer is a gentler plan built around comfort rather than cosmetic perfection.

Tell the groomer what has changed

• New diagnoses, medications, recent procedures, or changes in appetite and energy.

• Arthritis, weakness, balance problems, or difficulty standing on particular legs.

• Lumps, skin tags, tender areas, hearing loss, or reduced vision.

• Signs of stress that now appear sooner than they did at previous appointments.

For a senior pet, a comfortable incomplete groom can be kinder than a perfect groom that asks for too much.

Adjust the appointment, not the pet

Useful adaptations include non-slip surfaces, supportive handling, seated or side-lying work when safe, lower dryer settings, extra rest breaks, and shorter appointments split across different days. A simple comfort trim may be more appropriate than an elaborate style.

1. Use brief home brushing sessions to prevent the mats that require longer salon work.

2. Book quieter appointment times and avoid unnecessary waiting.

3. Prioritize nails, hygiene areas, eyes, paws, and painful tangles first.

Watch the recovery, too

A little tiredness after an appointment may be normal, but prolonged panting, limping, unusual confusion, pain, or difficulty settling deserves attention. Share what you notice with the groomer and contact your veterinarian when symptoms are new or concerning.
